The Surface is a black-and-white series of two paintings depicting a magnified view of a large green chafer beetle. This artwork aims to portray the beauty of the insect through an abstract composition of its anatomy, emphasized by the use of lines and tonal contrast. The elytra in each painting is coated with a layer of gloss to replicate the natural shine of the beetle’s shell. Furthermore, the small scale of the painting reflects the creature’s simplicity and diminutive size, thereby amplifying its uniqueness and beauty.

Here and Now /2026/02/09/here-and-now/ Mon, 09 Feb 2026 03:38:07 +0000 /?p=27795

This work captures a fleeting motion frozen in time — a moment of impact on water, splashing before vanishing. It symbolises how a passing stage of life unfolds, in a temporal, vibrant manner that cannot be held onto. Like the splash’s surge and fall, it reflects the impermanence of routine life experiences that come and go in the blink of an eye. The splash blooms like a flower, capturing the delight of savouring the present — a reminder that what feels permanent now will slip away into memory.

“Afterlight” refers to lingering emotions after a beautiful moment. Carved from soap — which naturally degrades over time — a burning candle sits in the centre, evoking visuals of a sundial, symbolising the ceaseless passage of time. It melts into a network of lines, representing the traces time leaves. Subtle blue and orange hues represent day and night, suggesting time’s continual movement. The work captures time’s impermanence, a reminder to cherish life’s moments before they come to pass.

Four organic forms interlock to form a geometric tile. Each design, inspired by Chinese papercutting, contains the artist’s family member’s respective Chinese zodiac and name, suggesting a unifying cultural motif. The fitting puzzle and tile symbolise unity and support, reflecting the Chinese belief of family as life’s foundation upheld in the household. This may be emphasised by the repetition of “home” in ancient Chinese on the inner walls. Red contrasting the beige stoneware suggests kinship and prosperity.
